Legends and myths about breast augmentation

Despite the great popularity of breast augmentation surgery, there are still pervasive myths about this operation. If you have decided to undergo breast augmentation and are inquiring about the procedure, you may come across information that is simply not true. The doctor Stéphane Smarrito specialist in breast augmentation will answer in detail all your questions about the operation.

8 MYTHS ABOUT BREAST AUGMENTATION

It is essential to be able to differentiate between accurate information and urban legends. Below are some common myths about breast augmentation that you may encounter.

MYTH 1: I CAN’T BREASTFEED WITH IMPLANTS.

This is probably the most common myth when it comes to breast implants. An implant can take up space in the breast and slightly reduce milk production, but most women with breast implants can breastfeed without problems. As long as the nipples and milk ducts are not disrupted, the ability to breastfeed is not affected. Studies have shown that women with breast implants have as much difficulty breastfeeding as women who have never had the procedure.
It is also important to understand that there is no fear that a leaking breast implant will contaminate breast milk. Modern implants are completely safe for you and your baby.

MYTH 2: BREAST IMPLANTS ARE DANGEROUS

Like many falsehoods, there is some truth to this myth – or at least there was at one point. Still considered safe, saline implants contain benign salt water, which your body will quickly and safely absorb if the implant leaks. The story of silicone implants is slightly different.
In 1992, concerns about the safety of silicone implants prompted the public health authority to ban their use in most cases. However, additional studies failed to establish a link between the diseases and silicone implants, and silicone gel implants were reintroduced to the US market in 2006. Since then, millions of women have benefited of their breast implants safely.

MYTH 3: I SHOULD REPLACE MY IMPLANTS FREQUENTLY.

There is no reason to replace your implants unless there is a complication. Although surgeons recommend having your implants checked after ten years, this does not necessarily mean you will need to replace them. Many women have seen their implants last more than 20 years while remaining flexible and natural-looking.
One of the most common reasons for replacing a breast implant is saline leakage. If a saline implant leaks or ruptures, the saline solution leaks out and causes the breast to deflate. Although this is not dangerous, sometimes it is quite obvious and your surgeon will need to replace the implant.

MYTH 4: MY BREASTS WILL LOOK FAKE.

Modern advancements have allowed breast implants to look and feel completely natural. As each patient is different, several different methods and strategies are used to perform breast augmentations. Ultimately, each augmentation is tailored to each patient in order to achieve natural-looking results.

MYTH 5: I WILL LOSE SENSATION AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION.

After breast augmentation, it is normal for patients to lose sensation around the nipples. However, as the nerves heal and adapt, sensation gradually returns. It is rare to permanently lose sensation in the nipples.

MYTH 6: MY RESULTS WILL APPEAR IMMEDIATELY.

As is the case with most cosmetic procedures, the results will not be visible immediately after the operation. Your muscles will react to the procedure by contracting, which will have the effect of placing the implants higher on the chest. Swelling will also prevent you from seeing results immediately. As your body recovers, your implants will return to a more natural position. The final results will be visible approximately 8 to 12 weeks after the procedure.

MYTH 7: BIGGER IS BETTER.

Patients sometimes try to apply the saying “go big or go home” to their breast augmentation surgery. It's not a good idea. One reason is that you don't want your breasts to be out of proportion to the rest of your body. This can make your increase seem fake and exaggerated. You also don't want to suffer from back and shoulder pain, as is often the case when putting large breasts on a smaller person.
Also note that a breast that is too large may require several surgical procedures. If you want to increase your bust by several sizes, you may need to do the increase in stages. Your skin needs time to relax and accept the implant, which doesn't happen properly when you stretch things too far and too fast.

MYTH #8: IMPLANTS CORRECT SAGGING BREASTS.

If your breasts are sagging, adding implants will not solve the problem. Only a breast lift can reverse sagging. You can have a breast lift and augmentation at the same time, but don't expect breast implants alone to make your breasts more perky.
