The blue tattoo: need for a specific approach to tattoo removal controlled by RIVIERAclinic laser centers.

The benefits of picosecond laser are many: fewer sessions necessary and a reduced healing phase.

Which laser should I use to remove blue tattoos?

Laser treatment is the gold standard method for removing tattoos and a fortiori, blue tattoos. However, not all lasers are equal in removing blue pigments. On the other hand, you need perfect mastery of technology to remove a blue tattoo.

Thus, latest generation lasers (those available to you at the RIVIERAclinic) delivering high energy in a very short time are the most effective compared to traditional Q-Switched lasers. Thanks to their pulsation duration of the order of picoseconds, the pigment particles are fragmented by photothermolysis and photoacoustics without damaging the surrounding tissues. Then, the healing phase is shorter, allowing subsequent sessions to be carried out more quickly than when a Q-Switched laser is used.

In addition to the laser type (picoseconds vs. nanoseconds), the wavelength of use is also very important. Indeed, lasers with a wavelength of 755 nm (Alexandrite) and 532 nm are more efficient than 1064 nm Nd: YAG lasers.

Tattoo removal of a blue tattoo: a matter of pigment

Tattoo removal of a blue tattoo is specific. Indeed, to remove blue from a tattoo, you must refer to the chemistry of the pigment. In addition, blue tattoo removal following an artistic tattoo requires a specific laser wavelength. There are multiple inks used to make a blue tattoo. Currently, the use of natural pigments in manufactured tattoo inks is rare. Most blue inks include chemically synthesized pigments.

Blue mineral pigments are numerous. Among them, we can cite the following:

Le lapis lazuli contains mainly lazurite, composed of aluminum, sodium and silicon. Its chemical formula is (Na,Ca)8 [(AlSiO4)6 (SO4,S,Cl)2]. It gives an intense and vivid blue. It is a natural pigment.

THEazurite is a copper carbonate with the formula Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2. It is a Mediterranean blue.

Le cobalt blue is an aluminum and cobalt oxide with the formula Al2CoO4. It is also known as Pigment blue 28. Its color is a deep blue, slightly purple.

Le Egyptian blue is a copper and calcium silicate with the formula CaCuSi4O10 obtained by synthesis. It is also called Pigment blue 3.

Le prussian blue is a ferric ferricyanide with the formula Fe4[Fe (CN)6]3

In addition to mineral pigments, phthalocyanines, particularly copper phthalocyanine, are a class of organic pigments widely used in blue inks. Phthalocyanines are very stable compounds. They are resistant to light, heat as well as bases and acids.

Tattoo removal and pigment toning as the laser passes, involvement in color tattoo removal

In what cases is tattoo removal of blue inks tricky?

Some blue inks containing titanium dioxide, white pigment can immediately blacken when the laser passes. This makes tattoo removal difficult.

Note that the color change is due to the reduction of titanium IV atom to titanium III.

In addition to this aesthetic aspect, this white pigment absorbing very little visible light, current laser treatments at 532, 755 and 1064 nm are not very effective.

Should colored tattoos be removed urgently?

Future ban on blue tattoos by the EU

No, of course. Existing tattoos should not be removed. Switzerland has not issued a recommendation regarding European directives (at the time of this information article). The withdrawal of 4000 substances is dated for 2021, with a deadline for blue and green of 2023. It is a safe bet that the pigment restrictions will also concern Switzerland. Link to the European legislation.

From a doctor's point of view, the withdrawal of dangerous or carcinogenic products is always received positively. On the other hand, in the absence of an alternative solution, it is unrealistic to believe that color will be banned in tattoos. Indeed, tattoos are part of the history of humanity. Although we love the black pink style perfectly mastered in our region, it is unlikely that Japanese or old school tattoos will be abandoned.

For a laser center, our concern is mainly towards the use of artisanal pigments or found on the internet which make tattoo removal more difficult. Likewise, professional tattoo artists master the depth and hygiene of the tattoo. The ban could even emerge from questionable practices.

New compliant pigments will be found by manufacturers, as a specialist in color laser tattoo removal, we are currently studying the reactions of organic pigments to tattoo removal... to be continued.
